Introduction

Industrial visits give engineering students an opportunity to see how the concepts studied in the classroom are applied in real working environments. With this aim, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering organized a visit to Maker Village, Kochi, for the students of CSE A (2024–28 batch) on 7 October 2026. The visit exposed students to a hardware startup and innovation ecosystem, including fabrication facilities and emerging-technology labs.

About Maker Village

Maker Village is a hardware incubation and prototyping hub located within the Kerala Technology Innovation Zone at Kinfra Hi-Tech Park, Kalamassery, Kochi. It supports startups, entrepreneurs and student innovators in building electronics and hardware products by providing shared lab infrastructure, prototyping tools and a collaborative working space. The campus also houses FabLab Kerala and the Future Technologies Lab, as seen on the building signage.

Objectives of the Visit

  • To familiarise students with a startup and product-development environment.
  • To expose students to prototyping, fabrication and hardware development facilities.
  • To help students connect classroom learning in computer science with real-world applications and emerging technologies.
  • To encourage innovation, entrepreneurial thinking and interest in building products.

Visit Details

The students, accompanied by the faculty members, reached Maker Village on the morning of 7 October 2026. On arrival, the group was received by the Maker Village team and taken through the facility. The students gathered on the working floor, where a member of the Maker Village staff briefed them about the facility, its labs and the work carried out there. The students then toured the different labs and workspaces and interacted with the staff. The visit concluded with a group photograph in front of the FabLab Kerala, Future Technologies Lab and Maker Village building.

Learning Outcomes

Through the visit, students were able to:

  • Gain first-hand awareness of how a hardware incubator and prototyping facility operates.
  • Understand how an idea moves from concept to prototype to product.
  • Appreciate the role of makerspaces and fabrication labs in modern engineering and innovation.
  • Recognise the opportunities available for students in the startup and product-development space.
  • Understand the importance of interdisciplinary skills, combining software, electronics and design.

Justification for PO PSO mapping

OutcomeJustification
PO3 Design/development of solutionsStudents saw how a problem becomes a prototype and then a product, including the practical constraints in building one.
PO5 Modern tool usageStudents saw fabrication and prototyping tools and the technologies used to turn ideas into hardware products, which is exposure to modern engineering and IT tools.
PO6 The engineer and societyThe startups and makers there build products for real user and societal needs, which links engineering work to its responsibilities.
PO9 Individual and team workThe visit was a group activity in a multidisciplinary setting where software, electronics and design people work together.
PO10 CommunicationStudents listened to the briefing, asked questions and interacted with professionals. They also produce this report, which supports writing and documentation skills.
PO11 Project management and financeA startup incubator shows how products are planned, prototyped and taken to market, and it introduces entrepreneurship and resource management.
PO12 Life-long learningSeeing emerging technologies and the pace of the startup ecosystem shows why continuous learning is needed.
PSO1 Hardware prototyping, electronics and embedded and IoT work show how hardware and software combine in real systems.
PSO2Students saw how software supports hardware products built for industry and society. This is stronger if the labs showed software-driven demonstrations.
